Inditherm’s Construction business received a Sustainability Best Practice award from the British Precast organisation. British Precast represent the UK precast concrete industry and the awards are designed to stimulate better environmental practice.
The award specifically relates to the use of Inditherm technology for accelerated concrete curing, developed as part of a collaborative European project. Systems have already been installed in precast concrete production facilities and used during on-site construction projects such as Heathrow Terminal 5.
Traditional methods for speeding up the concrete curing process include increasing cement content, using chemical additives, heating with water or steam and blowing hot air under insulating blankets. The energy consumption of a typical Inditherm system can be less than 20% of that required using water or steam, with clear savings on energy cost and environmental impact.
Manufacturers not using heating can benefit from accelerated curing by reducing turn-round times and increasing product output. One day’s lost output from a single production line can represent many thousands of pounds of revenue, so Inditherm heating systems can generate fast payback in many situations. Reliable curing times can also allow manufacturers to reduce cement content and admixture use, offering further cost saving opportunities and environmental benefits.
In his remarks on receiving the award, Inditherm’s Chief Executive, Nick Bettles, commented: “We are delighted that the environmental benefits of our technology have been recognised in this field. The cost benefits of our technology in concrete curing applications are compelling and we hope this award will stimulate further interest.”
