Inditherm heater pads are mounted on insulation and
encapsulated in rugged outer covers with hot weld seams to ensure that each unit
is sealed and waterproof. Pads typically measure 10m x 0.5m (33' x 20") but may
vary in length to fit around the edges of greens, ensuring heating over the
entire area.
The pads are typically laid at a depth of 250mm to 300mm (10" to 12") under
greens and around 200mm (8") under tees. This means that it is necessary to
rebuild the green or tee, or install the system when the golf course is under
construction. The pads are wired in groups of 4 to waterproof junction located
on the base drainage layer. Cables run power at low voltage (50V) from power
control panels discretely located adjacent to each playing area.
The pads are spaced to allow for efficient drainage and optimum heating of
the playing surfaces. The spacing depends upon the expected ambient conditions
and therefore varies from a minimum of 500mm (20") up to 800mm (32"). On a
typical green with pads spaced at 600mm (24"), there would be an average of
around 50 pads. Detailed tests have proven that this arrangement has no adverse
effects on drainage under a well-designed playing surface.
Pad orientation will depend upon a number of factors, such as the
configuration of the drainage and sprinkler systems, and the location of the
control panel.
Each heating pad is designed to work up to approximately 30°C (86°F). The
sand layer has good heat dissipation properties and storage capabilities that
help to keep the surface frost free without damaging the grass
roots.
